In 1959, Padma Bhushan Shri K. J. Somaiya — the industrialist known across India as the “Sugar King” — set his business aside for a single conviction: that education is the truest form of nation-building, and that those who have been fortunate owe a duty to lift others.
That belief built a school for the Warli tribal children of Dahanu — today the Nareshwadi Learning Centre — and it funds scholarships across our Mumbai campuses to this day. Every gift you make keeps his promise alive, and passes it to the next generation.

CSR giving works differently to a personal donation
Under the Companies Act, 2013, corporate CSR is a governed, documented commitment — usually a major, multi-lakh or multi-crore contribution to a defined project. So it doesn’t run through the online donation form. Instead, our team partners with yours: we align on a cause that fits Schedule VII and your CSR policy, agree the project and budget, complete the paperwork, and report back on impact.

How a CSR partnership works
From first conversation to impact report — a clear, compliant path.

You review the causes that fit your CSR focus; we have an initial conversation about goals, budget and the outcomes you want to achieve.

Enquiry
Your team submits a short CSR enquiry (below) with company details, focus area and an indicative budget. No payment — this simply starts the conversation.

Proposal & due diligence
We share a project brief — the need, budget, milestones, impact metrics and Schedule VII mapping — along with our compliance pack (CSR-1, 12A, U.S. 501(c)(3), PAN). Your CSR committee completes its due diligence.

Agreement (MoU)
We sign an MoU / CSR agreement defining the project, deliverables, timeline, monitoring and reporting. Your Board / CSR Committee approves the project.

Fund transfer
Funds are transferred by RTGS / NEFT / cheque to the designated CSR account (major CSR gifts move by bank transfer, not card).

Implementation & monitoring
Funds are deployed to the project. We share periodic progress updates so your team can monitor utilisation, as the Act requires.

Documentation & receipts
We issue the receipt, U.S. 501(c)(3) certificate and a utilisation certificate for the funds spent.

Impact report & renewal
You receive a utilisation and impact report for your Board’s CSR report (and an independent impact assessment where required for large projects). We then explore renewal for the next cycle.

CSR is well-documented by law. Here’s what changes hands, so there are no surprises.
What Somaiya provides
- CSR-1 registration number (mandatory for implementing agencies since April 2021)
- 12A & U.S. 501(c)(3) certificates and the entity’s registration certificate
- PAN and NGO Darpan ID (where applicable)
- Project proposal / brief with budget, milestones and Schedule VII mapping
- MoU / CSR agreement
- Receipt & U.S. 501(c)(3) certificate on fund transfer
- Utilisation certificate and an impact report
What we’ll need from you
- Company KYC — CIN, PAN and GST
- CSR policy alignment and Board / CSR Committee approval of the project
- Authorised signatory details for the MoU
- Focus area & indicative budget for the contribution
- Preferred recognition and any employee-engagement interest
- Reporting needs — the format your Board report requires
The exact receiving Somaiya entity and its current CSR-1 / 12A / U.S. 501(c)(3) registration details, and the tax treatment of the CSR contribution for your company, should be confirmed with our team and your advisors before you commit.
Is your company covered?
CSR under Section 135
Companies meeting any of these thresholds in a financial year must spend at least 2% of their average net profit (of the preceding three years) on CSR:
- Net worth of ₹500 crore or more, or
- Turnover of ₹1,000 crore or more, or
- Net profit of ₹5 crore or more

Questions CSR teams ask
Is there a minimum contribution?
There’s no fixed minimum, but CSR partnerships are typically major, project-scale contributions. Smaller amounts are welcome too — we’ll match your budget to a cause and scope of impact.
Which Schedule VII activities does Somaiya cover?
Education (ii), research promoting SDGs (ix), preventive healthcare (i), rural development (x) and art & culture (v). We map your chosen cause to the relevant head in the project brief.
What documentation will we receive?
The CSR-1 registration number, 12A and U.S. 501(c)(3) certificates, an MoU, receipts, a utilisation certificate and an impact report — everything your Board’s CSR report needs.
Can we get an impact assessment?
Yes. We provide utilisation and impact reporting, and can arrange an independent impact assessment where the Companies (CSR Policy) Rules require one for larger projects.
How are CSR funds transferred?
By RTGS, NEFT or cheque to the designated CSR account, against the signed MoU — not by card.
Is the contribution tax-deductible for us?
We issue a U.S. 501(c)(3) certificate for the contribution. The tax treatment of CSR spend for your company is specific to your situation — please confirm it with your advisors.
